Why the alto sax?

by John Bayne
(South Taranaki, New Zealand)

Since the tenor saxophone can play as high, or even higher than the alto and has a timbre not so open to ridicule as the alto and baritone sax, and it has the brilliance of the alto, at least if it is worked for, which very few bartione sax players attain to, and has the richness of the baritone sax which no alto sax player can reach down to, it makes the alto only a stepping stone to the tenor for the ultimate playing.
