Sax Reeds by: Shadowman
There are many good brands of reeds, some more suitable for different types of playing or sound.
I started on Rico when I was a kid, and still play on Rico after 50 years of playing the sax. I am moving to a plastic reed to cut down on expense. The problem with cane reeds, they are not always ALL playable, and if you practice a lot, you will go through reed quickly, especially if you are usng a softer reed.
A 2 and 1/2 strength is usually good for a beginner, but it also depends on the size of the tip opening on the mouthpiece. The smaller the tip opening, say a #3, the easier it is to close off the mouthpiece with a softer reed, if you use too much pressure. Many instructors try to start students off with a harder reed, trying to " build the lip " but if you cant easily get a good sound out of the horn, it takes all the fun out of it!
