The best brand for saxophone, no matter what type, is Selmer. Preferably made in Paris.

There are more than three types of saxophone. The four most commonly used are (from highest voice to lowest) soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone. Those are the four saxes used in saxophone quartets. However, there is a sopranino saxophone which is higher (and smaller) than a soprano and there is also a bass saxophone which is lower (and larger) than the baritone sax. You can find videos on You Tube of people playing each kind of sax. And you can find all sorts of stuff on the internet.

Hope this was helpful!

I agree with the comment about Selmer but there are other brand who are similar in quality, sound and performance like Keilthwert, Yamaha, Cannonball and Yanagisawa. I own an Cannonball big bell and is an excellent and versatile instrument. A good choice of quality and price!!!

Selmer is still best....

I bought my Selmer Mark VI tenor in 1964 - serial # 847xx. I've not heard any saxophone whose sound compares to it.
However, I DO prefer the soft, darker sound of the vintage saxes. Today's saxes (i.e., Ref 36/54) sound "brighter" with more penetration/projection.
So, I like small group jazz where the vintage sound fits in perfectly.
My Mark VI has been re-lacquered (1981) and didn't lose a thing. It's been overhauled (2009) then re-adjusted by a pro in Dec., 2009. It plays just great today. The low register is really easy to reach because (IMOP) of Rovner's "Boost Juice" application, coupled with Hollywood Sax Clamps. Great results.
