Tenor Saxophone Fingering Chart

A tenor saxophone fingering chart is essential for learning to play this soulful instrument. If you have a book to learn the instrument, it probably includes a complete chart showing how to finger the notes. It will at least have your beginning notes. There are also fingering charts available online. For an interesting experience, you might try an "interactive" fingering chart which changes the diagram as you choose a different note.

A good feature to look for in fingering chart is for it to show alternate fingerings for different notes. Some can be played in different ways which can be useful in different applications. For instance, you might want a different fingering when moving through a quick run as compared to a note you need to sustain for a while. A good chart will show you these variations and even suggest applications for different fingerings.

Sometimes a fingering chart shows the keys and levers in a vertical format, similar to the way you actually hold the sax. Other charts show the diagram in a horizontal format. Presumably this format saves on space on the printed page. It is a good idea to become familiar with both styles of fingering chart. They may seem confusing, but with a little practice you will soon be able to read both types.

Perhaps you would like to carry a laminated tenor saxophone fingering chart with you in your tenor sax case so you have it to refer to wherever you may be. Some notes are simply less frequently played and it is possible to forget the fingering even if you've learned it. A handy chart can help jog your memory if this should happen when you're out jamming with friends. After all, the guitar players all tote around their chord charts. Saxophonists are entitled to a little help, too.
