How to clean a sax

by Dale Lewis
(Spokane, Washington)

A friend who passed on recently left me an alto sax. I'm a bass player with no horn playing or owning experience. I had a guy play the horn; he said it worked well, but tasted musty. What should I do to clean up the horn? Thanks.

Saxophone Cleaning
by: SaxyJoe

What kind of saxophone is it? How old is it? These are many factors in how to go about cleaning the horn. There are saxophones swabs that are available to purchase. I recommend taking the swab through the horn after playing it. This will help keep the inside of the horn clean. If the pads are sticking, there's a few things you can do to clean those. If there is crud on the pad or tone hole, use a piece of printer paper, place in under the key and close it. Then you twist very lightly, you should see some of the stuff come off on the paper. Then I use rubbing alcohol on a cu-tip to clean the tone holes themselves. Hopefully this helps a little. Good luck!
