Hawk Alto Saxophone

I am looking to purchase a used Hawk Alto Saxophone as a gift for my husband. Don't know anything about saxophones or brand names. Owner bought the sax 4-5 years ago for sister to play in college band, was played sparingly, used as backup instrumen for college band. Recently tuned, no dents, nicks or bent keys. Is Hawk a good brand? What should I look for when I look at the instrument? Owner asking $285.00 or best offer. I don't know anything about costs, seems should be lower for a used instrument from what I'm seeing on other websites. What can you tell me about Hawk Brand and is the asking price too high?

Hawk is made by Chinese manufacturer. It is a solid brand for beginner...with excellent sound. However, after a year of playing, the instrument will probably start falling apart. You can get a brand new alto sax for around $260, with 5-year guarantee...so a used one should be around $150 or less, depending on condition. Overall, the Hawk brand is a great value, if you're just using it to learn or try out, until you get a more solid one like a Yamaha or Selmer.
