early conn alto new wonder missing an opening

by James Thaman

I have an old conn alto I believe to be a New wonder "chu Berry" serial #1554xx. I imagine this is from around 1926, one of the earlier New Wonders. It is exactly like the others but is missing a key and opening. The lowest hole on the left hand side of the body (just before the joint) has a plate over it. All the others that I have seen have a cup and pad there. What key is it that is not there and why?
Thanks
