Changing from Classical to Jazz

Does anyone have any tips on how to get the feeling and rhythm and jazz into my system after previously only playing classical music? I really want to start jazz but it's just not working for me

In classical you play the notes exactly as described. In jazz it's more of an outline. Some styles come in a little behind the beat; others ahead of the beat. Some notes are lengthened and others are shorter. If you try and play a jazz book straight it will sound awkward.

The Abelard series is a great place to start. Try Maiden Voyage. Includes a music book and CD.

Finding a good jazz teacher is really worth it. Personal compaibility/chemistry is key.
