Advanced Soloing - Squealing - (Tenor Saxophone)

by Tim Facemire
(Southern Maryland, US)

I am from a small town school with an unknowledgeable director, i would like to know the way to squeal on a tenor sax just like professionals. I have full range on my instrument and have played and soloed difficult music before, i would just like to know how to squeal so i can add it to my soloing.

Altissimo Notes (Squealing)
by: Mike E

The squealing notes that I believe you're referring to are Altissimo notes. There are a fair number of sites that have fingering charts for altissimo notes, but the most important techniques to learn are proper embouchure positioning to hit the different registers correctly. I learned to play altissimo notes from a private teacher and it took quite a bit of practice to master. If you're not careful, altissimo notes come out simply as "squealing" and no one wants to hear them. If you master them they can add quite a bit to your performance.
