1931 Selmer Cigar Cutter Alto Sax

by Marc Kovitz
(Hoffman Estates, IL. USA)

My 92 year old father just passed away. During WWII as a 1st. Lt. in the Army Air Corp and as a navigator instructor Dad also had a band which they played for the troops. Before the war dad played for different big bands in Chicago. Dad played Alto Sax. After the war Dad would just play on rare occasions for his own enjoyment.

I have his 1931 Selmer Cigar Cutter Alto Sax in Burnished Gold, Serial No. 14322 and the original case. It was overhauled in 1995 for $495.00 back then (new pads, etc.), and then never played again. The sax is without dings and dents and in pretty good condition given its age.

Can anyone give me a "ball park" value and is there a used sax market for this instrument

Thanks,
Marc Kovitz

Cigar Cutter

That is a great vintage horn, there were 3 styles
14000-15469 1931-1932
15470-17079 1932-1933
17080-17186 1933-1933
I believe that this is a very under rated horn, this was the first big bore, the "Dorsey Model" was a cigar cutter with better engraving and some sheet metal key guards, one of the rarest of all selmer horns.

I own a super cigar cutter 170XXX , I love the sound and the action.

On ebay you see them for 3500.00, a great deal. In my opinion these will be going straight up in price, they are rare and a great horn.

by: john lowe Durham UK

Hi, Just read your comments re your Dads old Alto Sax. I am sure he had agreat time with it. Sorry to see he has passed on but to get to 90 is quite is some acheivment.

I have a a Selmer Cigar Cutter Alto Sax 1933 No 18703, it was made to the end of Selmers run of this model. Mine has the SSS mark just under the Address on the Bell, check if you have this?

Price guidence is from £1500 to £2500 according to condition. I have had mine since 1963 (47 Years) and plsy semi pro in Big swing / Classical Bands.

I would not part with my Sax ,its the best I have ever Played. I hope you find a good home for it.

Good Luck

John Lowe Aged 75.
