1931 Selmer Cigar Cutter Alto Sax

by Marc Kovitz
(Hoffman Estates, IL. USA)

My 92 year old father just passed away. During WWII as a 1st. Lt. in the Army Air Corp and as a navigator instructor Dad also had a band which they played for the troops. Before the war dad played for different big bands in Chicago. Dad played Alto Sax. After the war Dad would just play on rare occasions for his own enjoyment.

I have his 1931 Selmer Cigar Cutter Alto Sax in Burnished Gold, Serial No. 14322 and the original case. It was overhauled in 1995 for $495.00 back then (new pads, etc.), and then never played again. The sax is without dings and dents and in pretty good condition given its age.

Can anyone give me a "ball park" value and is there a used sax market for this instrument

Thanks,
Marc Kovitz
